Colorado Springs Hikes with Kids | by Lauren Bounds Photography
If you’ve ever tried to plan a family hike and immediately thought, “this sounds like more work than it’s worth,” you’re not alone.
The right trail makes all the difference—especially with younger kids. You want something scenic, easy to navigate, and flexible enough to let your kids explore without feeling rushed.
These are some of the best Colorado Springs hikes with kids that local families actually enjoy (and keep coming back to). They’re also some of my favorite spots for family photo sessions because they naturally create space for connection, movement, and real moments.
Bear Creek Nature Center
If you want an easy, low-pressure outing, this is one of the best places to start.
The trails around Bear Creek are wide, flat, and perfect for little legs. There’s plenty of space for kids to wander, climb on rocks, and explore without you feeling like you have to constantly redirect them.
Why families love it:
- Short, manageable trails
- Shaded areas (great for warmer months)
- Creek access = built-in entertainment
- Bathrooms and parking nearby at the Nature Center that is super fun for kids too!
This is the kind of location where kids can just be kids—and that’s usually when the best moments happen.
Red Rock Canyon Open Space
If you love the look of Garden of the Gods but want something a little less crowded, this is your spot.
Red Rock offers open trails, stunning views, and plenty of room for kids to run without feeling boxed in.
Why it works well for families:
- Wide, open trails
- Beautiful red rock backdrops
- Space to explore without strict boundaries
- Less crowded than other popular spots
It’s ideal for families who want that adventurous feel without committing to a long or difficult hike.
Garden of the Gods
This is the classic for a reason.
While it can get busy, there are plenty of paved and easy trails that make it very kid-friendly—especially if you go early or on a weekday.
What makes it great:
- Iconic Colorado views
- Easy, paved walking paths
- Quick access to multiple scenic spots
- Perfect for out-of-town families
If you’re visiting Colorado Springs or want those well-known views in your family photos, this is always a strong option.
Palmer Park
Palmer Park is one of the most underrated spots for families.
There are so many different trail options here, which makes it easy to adjust based on your kids’ energy level that day.
Why parents love it:
- Variety of trails (short or longer loops)
- Elevated views of the city
- Rock formations kids love to climb
- Less crowded than other parks
It gives you that “we went on an adventure” feeling without needing to drive far or commit to anything intense.
Pulpit Rock Park
If your kids like a little challenge (or climbing on rocks), this one is always a hit.
The hike up is short but engaging, and the views at the top feel like a big reward without a long trek.
What to expect:
- Short, slightly steeper hike
- Big rock formations to explore
- Incredible views at the top
- Best for slightly older or more active kids
It’s quick, fun, and feels like a true “hiking” experience without being overwhelming.
Choosing the Right Trail for Your Family
Not every hike needs to be a big production. The best experiences usually happen when you choose a trail that matches your kids’ personalities and energy—not what you think it “should” look like.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Shorter is usually better
- Let your kids lead parts of the adventure
- Build in time to stop, explore, and play
- Don’t worry about perfection—connection matters more
- Snacks, water, sunscreen, and a hat are key items to pack for any hike
Turning These Moments Into Something You Can Keep
These kinds of outings—where your kids are running, climbing, laughing, and just being themselves—are exactly what most families want to remember.
It’s also why outdoor sessions on trails like these work so well.
You don’t have to force anything. No stiff posing, no pressure for kids to “behave.” I guide you just enough so it feels natural, while letting your family interact the way you normally would.
The result is photos that actually feel like your life—not something staged.
