Easy Day Trips from Colorado Springs | Lauren Bounds Photography

One of the things I love most about raising a family in Colorado Springs is how many incredible places are just a short drive away. When families ask me for ideas beyond the usual weekend spots, I always think about day trips that feel adventurous but still doable with kids.

Whether you’re local or visiting Colorado Springs, these easy day trips offer space to explore, connect, and make memories together — the kind that often inspire family photo sessions later on.

Below are some of my favorite family-friendly day trips from Colorado Springs.

Castle Rock: Philip S. Miller Park, Zipline, and the Incline

Philip S. Miller Park is one of the best family-friendly destinations near Colorado Springs. The park offers large playgrounds, open green space, and walking trails that work well for families with kids of all ages.

For older kids, the zipline at Philip S. Miller Park adds a fun sense of adventure without feeling overwhelming. Nearby, the Castle Rock Incline gives families another option for movement and challenge, especially for teens or parents who enjoy a good climb.

What makes this area stand out is flexibility. Families can combine active play with slower moments, creating a day that feels balanced rather than rushed.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

The Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of the most unique landscapes in Colorado and an unforgettable day trip from Colorado Springs. Kids naturally take the lead here — running, climbing, and rolling down the dunes without much direction needed.

Early mornings and evenings tend to be cooler and quieter, which works well for families with young children. The open space invites connection and play, making it easy to spend quality time together without distractions.

Royal Gorge Bridge and Royal Gorge Train

The Royal Gorge area offers two memorable experiences in one trip. Walking across the Royal Gorge Bridge gives families incredible canyon views and a sense of scale that kids often talk about long after the day ends.

For a slower-paced option, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad allows families to sit back and enjoy the scenery together. The train ride through the canyon is especially appealing for families who want to relax while still experiencing something special.

Salida, Colorado: Summer Adventures and White Water Rafting

Salida is a favorite summer destination for families who enjoy mountain towns with a relaxed feel. Downtown Salida is walkable and welcoming, with local shops, river access, and plenty of spots to stop and rest between activities.

For families with older kids, white water rafting on the Arkansas River adds an adventurous highlight. Even without rafting, Salida offers space to explore, connect, and enjoy being outdoors together.

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs is an ideal day trip for families looking to slow down. The natural-style pools and mountain setting create an environment that feels both peaceful and playful.

Families often enjoy alternating between soaking, exploring the grounds, and simply being present together. It’s an especially nice option after busy school seasons or active weekends.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is an iconic Colorado destination and an easy day trip from Colorado Springs. During the day, families can explore the amphitheater steps, nearby trails, and scenic overlooks.

Kids love the size and structure of the space, while parents appreciate the open-air setting and incredible views. Visiting in the morning or on quieter weekdays allows families to enjoy the area at a relaxed pace.

Golden, Boulder, and Denver

Boulder, Denver and Golden each offer something different while remaining close enough for a simple day trip.

Denver is ideal for museums, the zoo, and walkable neighborhoods. Boulder offers access to trails, open space, and a laid-back outdoor culture. Golden blends charming streets with river access and nearby hikes.

These destinations work well for families who want variety and flexibility throughout the day.

Why Families Love Day Trips Near Colorado Springs

These easy day trips from Colorado Springs create shared experiences that families carry with them long after the day ends. The laughter, movement, quiet moments, and unexpected memories often become the stories parents want to remember most.

As a family photographer in Colorado Springs, I see how meaningful these experiences become over time. Many families choose to document seasons of life that feel full, connected, and grounded — often inspired by days spent exploring together.

Planning Your Next Family Adventure

Whether you live in Colorado Springs or are visiting from out of town, these nearby destinations make it easy to explore without overplanning. Pick one location, pack snacks, and let the day unfold naturally.

If you’re looking to document this season with family photos that feel relaxed and genuine, I’d love to help you preserve it in a way that feels true to your family.
