When it comes to planning family photos in Colorado Springs, one of the most common questions I hear as a Colorado Springs photographer is: “What should we wear?” Choosing outfits that are both timeless and comfortable can make your fall family photos and fall mini sessions feel effortless and beautiful.

Kim is a mom to three kids and a pastor’s wife who has called Colorado home since 2009. Originally from Texas, she has always loved flowers, a good margarita, and helping women feel beautiful. Flower Wild began online in 2015 as she was raising her children. In 2018, Kim launched a fashion truck, which she later sold to open her first brick-and-mortar boutique in 2020. Shortly after, she expanded to Pearl Street in Boulder, creating a two-location fashion destination in Boulder County. Her heart is to make sure every woman who walks through her doors feels seen, welcomed, and confident in her style.

Q: What tips do you have for on-trend fashion styling for fall family photos?
Timeless silhouettes and coordinating colors are always our go-to methods. I often have customers bring in their family’s outfits and we find a dress that pulls it all together, but I love when people use the mom’s dress as the starting point!
Q: What colors or tones are trending this fall that would photograph well outdoors?
Blues and cream are always the easiest for our family to work with because you can bring in jeans and/or chambray. Browns are trending right now, so incorporating those tones will be great for an outdoorsy scene.
Q: How do you recommend styling accessories that elevate an outfit without being distracting in photos?
Accessories can get distracting fast, but coming from someone whose signature look is a maxi dress and a brim hat… bring pattern in with clothing pieces and leave the accessories solid. Less is more with jewelry in photos, in my opinion.
Q: Which pieces are flattering and comfortable for moms who will be moving around with kids?
A maxi dress with a smocked bodice is flattering, comfortable, and timeless.
Q: Which patterns or textures mix well with men’s fall basics?
A dainty floral is always a safe bet. You can also bring in embroidered pieces for a subtle hit of pattern and texture in one.
Q: Do you have a recommendation for shoes that are stylish but comfortable for walking in fields or parks?
Boots forever. They work in all seasons and photograph well.
Q: What layering options work best if the weather is cooler?
Ooo it depends on the style, but I always get overheated getting everyone to behave. A cardigan or denim jacket that works with the waistline of your dress is easy!

We have a hat bar where you can create your own brim hat. If your dress is a solid color, we recommend that to bring in some personality and coordinate with your family’s outfits.
